The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (Baroness Taylor of Stevenage) (Lab): Sports Clubs: Special Enterprise Zone Status

My Lords, I am very pleased to respond to this QSD. I thank my noble friend Lord Mann for securing this debate and opening it—because it gives me an opportunity to talk about football, which is never a bad thing as far as I am concerned, but also because it is an important issue. I thank all noble Lords for their contributions. My noble friend Lord Mann raises an interesting Question. Sports clubs have not been given special enterprise zone status. Enterprise zones were not designed as a designation for individual…

Lord Bassam of Brighton (Lab): Sports Clubs: Special Enterprise Zone Status

My Lords, the noble Lord, Lord Mann, makes a very good case and I hope that what I say is interpreted as supportive of it. My support for Brighton and Hove Albion is well known, and I declare it as a relevant interest in this debate. In fact, I have often thought that I should see if it is possible to change my title to Lord Bassam of Brighton and Hove Albion—I think it would be a novel thing to do. However, there is a serious point behind all this. It is a delight that the noble Baroness, Lady Taylor, is replying…

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury and Paymaster General (James Murray): VAT on Medication: Compassionate Access Schemes

It is a pleasure to respond to this debate. I thank my hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Danny Beales) for securing it, and for all his engagement and campaigning on this important issue. I know from my conversations with my hon. Friend that he cares deeply, as do I, about ensuring that patients can access innovative medicines, particularly when there is unmet clinical need. Free-of-charge arrangements play an important role in giving patients early access to medicines, as my hon. Friend so pow…

Louise Haigh: Rewiring the State

It is an excellent question and something that my hon. Friend the Member for Chipping Barnet (Dan Tomlinson), who sits in the Treasury as well as the Cabinet Office, has been working on through No. 10 North. We are planning a brand of civil service reform that will move civil servants from the centre to regional and local government in order to share expertise, and we will provide them with the AI and data expertise that we have at the centre in order to do exactly that.

The Prime Minister: Direction of Government

It is good to see the right hon. Gentleman again, and I appreciate what he said in endorsing my criticism of the water industry. We need to find significant reform; if that can be done cross party, so much the better. I am not familiar with the planning situation and the issue that he mentions, but I will look out for him, have a word with him and see if I can do something to look into it.
